GCSE Orienteering 2011-12 at the Palace Stables!!

The grounds of the Palace Demesne in Armagh continue to offer a perfect setting for the sport of Orienteering and provided once again the venue of our very successful Orienteering festival which this year attracted over 600 competitors from schools from both the S.E.L.B. and W.E.L.B.
Throughout the 2010-11 school we have witnessed an exponential growth in the number of schools participating in our GCSE Orienteering programme. Please see below details of the schools involved.
From September 2011 onwards, we are delighted to deliver a 3 session programme for pupils undergoing their G.C.S.E. in Physical Education. Schools entering our programme have the freedom to choose their own dates of availability but pre-booking is essential. Prices are £4.00 per pupil per session.
The details of our Orienteering programme is as follows:

Session One (2 hours 30 minutes)
Pupils are introduced to the sport of Orienteering via a short presentation and learn about the equipment needed to be a successful orienteer. After watching a short video, they participate in a variety of activities (e.g. relay, nine tree wood exercise) to learn about the use of a control punch, a control card and basic navigation techniques. Following this, pupils draw their own maps and discover how to read line features. Afterwards, students are monitored as they complete their first orienteering course (Star and Clover course).

Session Two (2 hours)
By the second day, pupils are able to complete more advanced orienteering activities. They learn how to set and use a compass (triangulating their position on open ground). They discover how to use pacing and are now competent enough to mark their own control points on a map. Later, they are given the opportunity to calculate a series of compass bearings and use them on a small course.

Session Three (2 hours)
Day Three focuses more on Orienteering competition itself. After a useful recap session, pupils learn about the preparation needed when entering an orienteering competition. They learn how to prepare their own maps and finally get a chance to tackle our main orienteering course.
