GCSE Orienteering Outline
Please note that a full assessment of pupils’ progress takes place during all three sessions and will be forwarded to schools to be used as part of their GCSE assessment.
Session 1
Detailed introduction to the sport of Orienteering including information on equipment used
Audio-visual presentation
Relay race -using special Orienteering equipment –control card, kite, punch…
Map-work –detailed analysis of Orienteering line features and navigation work
Nine Tree Wood exercise –practical application of navigation work
Star-Clover exercise –pupils will individually complete a short Orienteering course (10 controls). They will be fully assessed throughout and locate the controls in stages (i.e. get one control, then two, then three…
Session 2

An introduction to compass work-pupils receive and learn how to use a compass
Triangle/Rectangle exercise –pupils navigate around a short course reading from a selection of bearings from their compass
Pupils work out the bearings around individual course cards and then navigate around a course (Nine Tree wood) using only their bearings for guidance
Pacing- pupils learn about scale and how to pace/run when applying knowledge of scale
Follow Line Course –in an area of woodland, pupils fill in control points on blank Orienteering maps thus indicating precise knowledge of line features.
Session 3
Recap on session 3
Detailed introduction to preparing for an orienteering competition; rules and regulations etc, Orienteering codes…
Pupils copy out their own maps from a template (as done in a proper competition)
Map walk –pupils are taken on a guided walk around parts of the course
Course –pupils complete a timed 14 control course.
